Every season the Kawartha Park Nature Clean Up Crew organize various trash collecting projects. We focus mostly on roadside trash pickup and beach clean up. New garbage pops up daily it seems, and the beach is constantly being littered with blue styrofoam that washes up from the docks on the lake. Let's keep nature beautiful!! Interested in joining our crew? Know of an area of nature that needs some extra love? Join the fun for some hands on nature learning and give back to nature!

We pick up trash at least once a week that has washed up or is exposed at low tide on the local beaches around Puget Sound. We reuse plastic shopping bags and recycle the trash picked up. Although our efforts are a "drop in the bucket" in comparison to the trash found in the world's oceans, we hope that others will do the same at their local beaches. Even if only one bird or fish or other marine wildlife is saved by our efforts, it is worth it to us. Additionally, we are cleaning up the beach and eliminating trash from accumulating. We started this project in December of 2015. It will never end for us.

We will spread the word and everyone will come to the beach on Saturday and we will hand out trash bags.

The project will join forces with the local university Marine department and invite them to work with us. The local university will help us with the data information that we need as well as bring in marine life so that students will have a closer look. The students will keep a journal about their findings and make presentations to the class. They will display their work in the main hallway of the school to inform others about their work.

We have started to plan it and make posters advertising to our school to come. Also we are asking the science teachers if they will offer extra credit if people to come as an incentive.

Students will map GPS locations of all of the storm drains from our school to a 5 mile circumference around using Google Maps, GPS, trash weigh-ins, and accurate input of data onto spreadsheets. They will photograph their findings, and also videotape their efforts. They will come up with a rotational maintenance solution, which will be ongoing. They will then deliver a presentation to both the school at an assembly, as well as to Parents during Ecology Night in May, 2015. The Parent Night is being coordinated with an English Teacher, Mrs. Ximena Miller, whose husband is an active participant.
