By receiving this funding, we will be able to add more space for students to comfortably engage in science lessons & more planting areas for hands-on, student-driven learning. This project will also engage the school community. Getting the tables and garden beds build & installed is more than a one person job. I will organize a work day for students, families, teachers, community members, etc. to come & help with this infrastructure update! Once in place, students will then take control of the newly installed garden beds- planning, planting, & maintaining all that in put into the soil.

Being that we are from a small town, our young males have nothing to do in this town. We are wanting to do group projects with our young males. We want to help our young guys transition from boys to men. We will do a pre-survey and a post survey to see how this group is impacted throughout this community project.

Psychology tells you for change to be implemented a desire to change needs to be seen. Therefore, I believe that an intrinsic desire to be an environmental steward needs to take shape in the residents of the community that will then be expounded into the workplace, the schools, and beyond. Education will be key. 1. I would like to give a presentation to libraries, schools, and lunch office rooms about the importance of composting. I would like to infiltrate the community with the knowledge that one simple step can save thousands of waste in the landfills. 2. Teach composting a. what can be composted b. how do I compost c. ways to compost in small spaces d. benefits of composting 3. Go to the county and show them the cost of setting up city composting and the amount saved over time. 4. Find companies willing to pick-up residential and business food waste.

The RECO Club will begin growing food (suitable fruits and vegetables) as well as ornamentals in our school's rooftop greenhouse. We will try to develop diverse growing systems using aquaponics and soil/container gardening. Our school will look for funding to renovate the greenhouse for the longterm goal of adapting an urban agriculture curriculum for students with disabilities. In the meantime, students are looking to begin growing and caring for plants while learning about urban sustainability and biology. The RECO Club will also be taking on environmental campaigns and community service in NYC.
