The project will reach out to young people ages 10-25 years old, who are greatly impacted by HIV, Domestic Violence, Bullying and Suicide. Our goal is to call to action agencies, collaborators and partners in the community to gather, armed with information, stories, testimonies, straight talk, hugs and support. It is our desire that young people from schools and colleges will feel free to attend, as well as, garner efforts to reach out to those who have and may be experiencing the effects of these issues and don't know what to do. Agencies, clinicians, faith leaders, teachers and survivors will be available to help them heal.

My project will reduce boba tea plastic on Park Street (downtown area in Alameda, California), focus on healthy and communicative partnerships between boba tea store owners, the city government (who recently enacted a law against plastic use in restaurants), and community members such as high schoolers. My club will sell "boba kits" that consist of a reusable glass boba jar and a stainless steel straw (hence the name "Straws of Steel") for $6. This price has been chosen to be affordable for the differently situated people in Alameda. Additionally, as high schoolers are the boba tea stores' main audience, our main demographic will be those very same high schoolers (some of whom are our friends and family). To encourage high schoolers to use them, we are creating a discount system with the Park Street boba stores, where, for example, a student can bring in our "boba kit" and he/she will receive a 10% discount off their purchase.

I partnered with an after-school program of 4th - 6th graders called CLASP (Claremont After School Program) which helps kids do homework and learn new activities after school each day throughout the year. The CLASP leaders allowed me to teach for 45 minutes each session with two sessions per day.

A group of students researched potential causes of red tide and were shocked to discover that runoff from fertilizers might contribute to increased and more severe red tides, a naturally occurring phenomena. They decided to create a YouTube video to educate other students as well as present to our second graders.

We will go visit the Mini Pig Rescue and take pictures with our friends. We will try to partner with the rescue to inform other students in our school and surrounding schools about pigs and how special they are. We hope to raise donations for the Mini Pig Rescue and have people sign an oath to stay away from pork products for one year.

First we brainstormed the ideas of how we can accomplish our goal, and then we drafted and delivered a letter to the store Manager. We are waiting to hear back from him about our ideas for his store.
