We will be handing out wildflower seed packets as we teach about groundwater, native plants, and our GIPS Roots&Shoots mission.

We will cut the asphalt next to our lunch area and build a rain garden on our parking lot campus to help mitigate flooding. The basin of our rain garden is a long swale that will also serve as access to the back of the garden. It will be covered in wood chips. We will use native plants wherever possible and select for seasonal appeal and habitat value. We will not use any pesticides or herbicides in our garden.

We received grants from the Inland Empire Resource Conservation District to plant 50 plants between two schools in the community. We successfully worked together to plant the drought tolerant and native plants in garden areas at Lugonia Elementary and Barbara Phelps County School.

Our project would impact the part of the beach that we cleaned, and will impact the sea life and birds in the area. This will also give a good example to the beach goers, so they can pick up their trash off the beach too. We planned a good day for our club to go and then publicized it with our school so we can have a lot of help.

1. We have placed a blue recycling bin in every classroom and office in all of the buildings on the campus. 2. Environmental club officers have a floor of each building to monitor and to empty the bins. 3. Once a week the officers empty the classroom and office bins into a hallway bins. 4. The maintenance crew then empties the hallway bins into the bins outside. 5. The city of Milford picks up the recyclable paper once a week. 6. There are also recycle bins on the sports fields. 7. Recycling is required at every school event.

Alverno students will build a mini aquaponics system for demonstrating aquaponics at outreach events.

Alverno students plant native plants in 3 areas on campus (behind the science classrooms, around pond, and around statue). Also install 2 rain barrels to save water for birdbaths and for establishing native plants.

We will put in some plumbing on the pipes that leave the sand filter. This new plumbing is a device that will re-route the water into two hoses. The hoses will then run along the fence until they reach our two gardens that have trees

This project will make our school more attractive to students and visitors. The drought tolerant plants will save resources (water). We will use the money to purchase the plants (and other planting materials) and the students will do the work of planting and caring for this area.

We hope to be accepted and receive funds to plant plants in a very public area near a very traveled part of our campus that needs some beautification. The students are prepared to work with our maintenance crew and do the planting themselves.
