This Toolkit is your official guide to the 4-step formula for identifying and implementing a service campaign. Whether you’re working on your own or with a group, just remember…every action makes a difference.

Roots & Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute, is a global movement of youth who are empowered to use their voice and actions to make compassionate decisions, influencing and leading change in their communities.

COMPASSIONATE CITIZENSHIP

A compassionate citizen and/or leader is someone who considers how a decision will impact all creatures and our planet and works tirelessly to improve the lives of others. As Roots & Shoots members move through the program and create/implement a service-learning project, they grow skills and their compassionate traits bloom. From empathy to inspiring peers, these traits represent what it takes to be a well-rounded, self-confident individual who makes holistic, sustainable choices for people, other animals and the planet we share. Our 9 Roots & Shoots compassionate traits were identified and verified by youth, for youth.
